3 Reasons to Consider Organic Lawn Care and Natural Pest Control Solutions

According to the newly released report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the world's ecosystems are in dire danger. Species extinction rates are accelerating and grave impacts around the world are now likely.

“The Report also tells us that it is not too late to make a difference, but only if we start now at every level from local to global,” said IPBES Chair, Sir Robert Watson.

At Pure Solutions, our mission since inception, in 2005, has always been centered around organic, natural, and sustainable lawn care and tick and mosquito control solutions that have comparable efficacy to the more toxic synthetic chemicals that have been traditionally been used for decades.

Below are three reasons about "why" we believe it is important to only use organic, natural, and sustainable solutions when treating your property:

beeSince the late 1990's honeybees have been in serious decline due to the continued use of synthetic pesticides. Two of these pesticides are pyrethroids, which are used to control ticks and mosquitoes, and neonicotinoids which are common in traditional turf care applications. Studies have shown that “Pollinators are being increasingly exposed to a cocktail of pesticides, for instance up to 17 different pesticides were detected in just one sample of pollen from a honeybee colony (Frazier et al, 2008).”

sprayOne of the most popular and controversial weed killers, Roundup, has been declared by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer a probable carcinogen. Although the studies are not conclusive, a California jury ordered Monsanto (the manufacturer of Roundup) to pay significant fines for not disclosing the possible cancer risk to those who use it. This is an example of the harmful effects that long term use of toxic chemicals can cause without being realized until decades later.

tickThe CDC reports that the influx of tick activity and spread of Lyme disease is "strongly influenced by climate factors" due to the expansion of the geographic area in which ticks can survive. Using toxic chemicals to treat for ticks and mosquitoes will only make the problem worse in the long run by directly impacting your local environment and biodiversity.

There are numerous other reasons why it is important for all consumers to understand what the long term impact the chemicals they are using may be having on their properties and their communities. At Pure Solutions, we know that our treatment programs are safe, effective and natural. We are also optimistic about the direction our communities are moving in as we have seen massive improvements in regulations of chemicals since we first started but we have a long way to go. One recent example of this is Montgomery County Maryland who became the first major jurisdiction to ban cosmetic pesticides on lawns. Which is the first law of its kind in the nation.
